You stop consulting your feelings and start reading the evidence. Chronic stress resets your baseline - when you have lived at 9 on a scale of 1 to 10 for years without realizing it 9, can read as normal. The internal gauge stops reporting the data to you.
What still works is external data: sleep, pain days, word-finding, how fast you snap at someone who didn’t deserve it.
I told two different physicians I wasn't stressed while my body was actively coming apart. I wasn't lying or trying to “pull one over on them” I genuinely couldn't “feel” it. I only saw it when I started mapping it out day over day. Then I couldn't “un-see it.”
You may not feel it. But if you audit and log your days, you can start to “see” it and recognize it.

Depends who you are and what definition of “burnout” we’re using. The pure “workforce” definition that’s used in organizations has a very specific definition. If you’re talking about exhaustion running on fumes that no amount of sleep seems to help and you’re between the ages of 35 to 62, it’s possible it is both.
Perimenopause drops estrogen, estrogen regulates dopamine, and dopamine runs focus, working memory, and follow-through.
So the exact machine and process you’ve built your career on gets quieter right as the demand starts to get more intense.
That gap is where you start to see burnout accelerates.
Which means the question "is it me or my hormones" has a boring answer: it's a chemistry problem wearing a character-flaw costume.
And you can’t just willpower your way out of burnout.

Your job didn’t get harder. The amount of fuel available to you to work with changed.
Estrogen helps regulate our dopamine, and dopamine is what your brain uses to help start tasks, hold a thought, and find the right word.
When estrogen swings, that supply takes the hit with it.
So if you find that it’s harder to start a task, to sit through a long boring meeting, to run that meeting, to stay focused, to remember what you were supposed to do, it’s the executive function disruption.
